How do you dispose of your expired flares?

Everything has a shelf life…and some things can become down-right dangerous if stored for too long.  Visual Distress flares are one such item.  But how do boaters get rid of them?  Or do you hold on to them indefinitely?

The Marine Board wants to learn what boaters do now with their expired flares.  We’re looking into a turn-in program and doing a mass-disposal in a hazardous waste facility.

Would this be a benefit to you?  We’d love to hear your feedback!

  1. I would like the Question “How do you dispose of your expired flares?” answered, not with a question. I want to know how to dispose flares.

  2. I have disposed of outdated flares in two ways. First, I used to take them to West Marine, and then I started taking them to fire station 17 here on Hayden Island. It’s also my understanding that certain qualified organizations sponsor annual flare practice sessions at Kelly Point Park. The flare practice sessions are publicized in local papers.
